Requirements for becoming a permanent resident of Canada

Requirements to become a permanent resident

You may be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada after you have the following work experience under the Live-in Caregiver Program
– 24 months of authorized full-time work as a live-in caregiver;
– 3,900 hours of authorized full-time work. You can complete these hours in a minimum period of 22 months. In calculating your hours, you may also include a maximum of 390 additional hours;
– The work experience must have been acquired within four years of the date of your arrival in the country.
Work experience gained under the Live-in Caregiver Program can also be used to obtain permanent residence under the Child Care or High Medical Needs Pathway.
When calculating your work experience, you cannot include:
– Periods of unemployment;
– Extended periods spent outside Canada. For example, if you leave Canada for a period longer than the holiday period allowed under your employment contract, this time will not be counted towards the employment requirement;
– Periods when you worked for your employer outside Canada, for example, on a family holiday;
– Periods when you worked in Canada as a caregiver while living away from your employer’s home. If you have such experience and wish to include it in your application, you must apply for permanent residence under the Child Care or High Medical Needs stream.

Factors that may affect your application

The following factors affect your application:
– You, your spouse or common-law partner, or any other family member has a criminal record, has a serious medical condition or poses a security risk;
– You have not provided truthful information to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
Applying for your family at the same time
You must name all your family members on your application for permanent residence. Your family members may undergo medical and criminal checks at the time you apply, even if they are not accompanying you to Canada. You will not be able to sponsor at a later date family members who you did not name in your application and who have not been verified.
You and the family members you named in your application may be granted permanent resident status at the same time or you may sponsor them at a later date, provided they meet the sponsorship requirements.
You and all your family members must first undergo medical and criminal checks before you can be granted permanent resident status.

Applying for an open work permit at the same time

You can apply for an open work permit at the same time as you apply for permanent residence. Once you receive your open work permit, you can work in the job of your choice.
